Schuyler Bain

Ahoy all ye lads and lasses. I would like to tell you a tale of privilege, dishonor, rebirth and redemption. So grab a bottle and a comfortable seat and listen as I tell the tale of my humble beginnings...

*takes a long pull from the bottle in his hand*

Born into a wealthy family, I had been well educated and next in line to take over my family's lucrative shipping empire. Started by my great-great grandfather, the Bain Shipping Company (BSC), had an impeccable reputation. Known for acquiring hard-to-find goods and shrewd, but fair business practices, The BSC's services and expertise were highly praised and sought after throughout the known world.

Just as I was set to inherit my birthright the unimaginable happened. The findings of a lengthy investigation were released to the public and formal charges leveled against my father and many of his business associates.

The local authorities had been watching the BSC for several years and had discovered that my father had leveraged the company's reputation to conduct less than honorable activities in the darker places of the world and commit acts of treachery on the high seas.

The BSC's headquarters and all of our holdings were seized, and my father and his coconspirators were taken into custody and hanged for their crimes within weeks of their indictment.

*takes another swig and clears his throat*

After the trial, I never saw my mother again. The fall of the family dynasty drove her into a deep depression that quickly destroyed her body, mind and soul. She was remanded to an institution where I am told she succumbed to her grief within a few months of arriving.

I was offered two options, I could be sent to a work camp on some gods-forsaken, ice covered island where I would live out my best years doing hard labor, paying for my father's crimes. Or I could enlist and become a guardsman, serving out my sentence in the service of others. Deciding that there was little difference between the two, I chose a third option...

*takes another long pull from his bottle of rum*

With little more than the clothes on my back and a pack with three stone worth of goods to my name, I joined the crew of a run-down sloop captained by a scruffy looking man and his enormous and hairy first mate to earn enough gold to pay for my passage to a new land.

The voyage to the other side of the world seemed to take forever, but I had grown up on ships and had made many voyages with my father as a lad. I found myself feeling rather at home out on the open sea. Still reeling from the events of the past year I found that I had a new sense of freedom.

While I had lost everything I was now unburdened by the expectations of others and had been given an opportunity. An opportunity to plot a new course for my life.

And thus began the many adventures of Captain Schuyler Bain.

I never forgot the three stone worth of goods I carried with me out of my old life and into my new. After more than twenty-five years at sea I decided to settle down. First Mate Jarvey and I invested our fortune into this fine establishment. I call her the Three Stone Tavern to remind me of where I came from and what led me here.
