Lore Dreams: the Fall of Luna

The Captain scribbles a quick note on the back of some old paper used to wrap fish

Ahoy! John! shipmate... what happened? How fare ye and the crew? Are you the only survivor of this tragic turn of events? Please tell me you weren't drinking any of the libations I provided you near an open flame. I believe I did warn ya, well I meant to anyway.

How can I help ye mate? Was it something those Luna-loving lubbers did or did not do that caused this? What can ye tell me about what happened?

Signed,
Captain Schuyler Bain

sighs deeply Rest in Peace Surveyor John(is he dead? If not, I surely will kill him when I find him!)... If only you could complete one simple contract ... you had ONE job!

Well since Surveyor John could not deliver as promised I have been forced to find a way to rebuild my legacy.

The reconstruction of my Rune Library has been foremost on my mind for some weeks. At first it seemed that there was none I could trust to assist me in the matter and the lackluster response to the defense of my previous library reduced my faith in my colleagues to the point where I though all was lost forever.

After seeing the wondrous crystals and magic dampeners the Mages of wind can produce. I pondered if these can this be incorporated into a new player rune library so we may be able to finally have something useful again.

Mages of Wind! could you please contact me regarding any possible assistance with our rune library relocation? All the Sols but mostly Lylah

Mages of Wind,
The protection your miraculous constructs could provide may actually be able to allow us to have a publicly accessible library again. I understand we cannot fully use these until Luna is no longer under siege.

Your offer is to not only protect our new library location, but give us this new location, I would be a fool to decline. I have already begun building the library at the location you sent me!

Much as this sounds like a miraculous gift, I am going to need the help of our community to build it back up. We will need you all who are not fighting the good fight in Luna to start marking runes to your favorite locations and sending them to me. You can leave them in the mail box at the work in progress library!

I can assure you that access to the bank of runes again would benefit, not just our fighters at Luna, but our defense as a whole.

It is true, a large amount of money was raised before the library was razed and I have been slowly putting it towards good use and the construction of the shell for what could be the greatest Rune Library of all time, albeit, over the elementally mutilated body of the traitor, Surveyor John.

We will get to work immediately to fulfill my calling as Rune Library curator, but respecting the magic within more this time and not forgetting our duty to save those left behind the walls in Luna and to prevent another catastrophe.

Chapter 10: "Search and Recover"

Tonight was a night that will go down in the history as one of the most bizarre and brave nights for the heroes of UOAlive. As the clock struck 7, more adventurers than had been seen in quite some time gathered around the fires in the Luna Refugee camp setup by the mages of Wind.

"Where is Morwen? Step forward!"

1630719867238.png

The Magistrate of Wind made her first appearance.

1630719903182.png

The adventures gathered around as she spoke.

She told them of their resolve, that their world could have been cracked apart has they not found the relics, and the harsh truth of Luna.

"Luna has fallen", The Magistrate said with a stern face.

"Our only hope now is to contain the evil magics seeping from the ground in what we call a timeloop..."

An adventurer blurted out their inner most thoughts with a shock, "What is a time loop?"

The Magistrate, without getting into too many details explained, "The stars, the moon, and the sun all rotate, expressing what we experience as time. When we have the Relics from inside the walls of Luna we shall use them to cast a shadow on the one light city of Luna to stop all time itself. Destined to repeat itself for an eternity in order to save the rest of this land. This way the maddened creatures won't even know they are secluded from our world."

The words stung like daggers to those still holding out hope that Luna could be saved, but the Magistrate saw this on their faces and immediately spoke sharply and to the point,

"If you do not do this now, the Shard itself will shatter, and the world you know will be gone, as well as everyone and everything you love in it. I hate to tell those of you who still bolstered hope, but Luna was lost the minute the old rune library exploded. But it is not about riches and awards anymore, it is about your survival and the survival of the entire Shard!"

1630721514941.jpeg

She asked if there were any other questions but everyone remained silent now awaiting their next instructions. They understood the brevity of the situation ahead of them.

The magistrate of Wild pointed toward to 3 Potions of Weightlessness on a table in front of her.

1630720359741.png

"We have been able to create 3 potions of weightlessness to help you to retrieve the relics and release them from the foundation of the library. You have two relics and three potions... do not miss."

Suddenly a very brazen voice could be heard, "they will, bunch of incompetent fools..."

1630721539164.jpeg

There he was, Surveyor John... Alive and well... well mostly, his legs were made of a forged gold metalic color, his face covered in burns and his hands wrapped showing no skin at all. He rode a new golden steed as well, I guess he got paid afterall...

1630720540611.png

"Surveyor John here, will be escorting you to the Relics as I am unable to enter the city" the Magistrate said to the shocked sounds of the audience around her.

"How can we trust this guy?!" shouted someone in the crowd.

"If you are all dead, I don't make money you fools. So don't you worry your tits off about me, I will get us there. Plus m' new legs haven't failed me yet" - He smirked as he took a swig of his last bottle of @Schuyler Bain 's ale.

Surveyor John gathered the 3 potions for safe keeping as they all prepared to enter the city.
Immediately upon reaching the gates, rats, snakes, rodents sprung up from the earth!

"I HATE RATS!" - Surveyor John proclaimed, it seemed the city was still manifesting fears from nightmares.

They made their way through the current wave of beasts and made quick work of many in their path.. until John's breath chilled. The air infront of him froze. And as he turned to ask if anyone else felt a chill he saw the breath of his brethren freeze as well and the ground burst open with Ice Demons and Elementals from all over!

MeA0SCH.png

They fought hard and made their way to the steps of the broken library.

1630721586544.jpeg

"MARVIN" John yelled.

Morwen stepped forward, and he handed her the first potion. Alas, she slipped and it fell from her hand cracking on the floor.
The entire groups gasp was enough to send shivers up their spines without ice demons around them.

2 potions left... John was not ready to give it to Malvin again. He looked for his "friend" @Schuyler Bain he handed him a potion and said "Last chance to get this, otherwise we have to use the last one for the collar as it is more important!"

Bain felt the pressure of the moment as as he lit the magical cocktail, forgot to let go of it as he held it over the remains of the staff on the ground.

*EXPLOSION*

"Did you just blow your hand off Bain?!" - John said in a gasp...

But regardless, the staff remains came free from the magic bonding and were able to be carried. But something was amiss and Arch Daemons began to summon around them as the foundation of the library shook violently below their feet. Then earth elementals. And then stone! The library itself was becoming the enemy! But the Arch Daemons... these had not been seen since Duma was last seen in the flesh. But the adventurer's were not worried about this as they were focused more on their fate once again lying in the hands of Morwen, since Bane only had one usable one left.

1630721676913.jpeg

Everyone gathered around Morwen, the silence palpable.

John yelled:
"NOW"

Morwen tossed the potion from the top steps

3...2....1....

1630721795575.png

1 potion missed.
1 Potion took off a hand
The last potion .... A PERFECT THROW!!!

The gorget of nightmares, seemed to lift from it's weighted place in the lava and float all the way to Morwen's pack!

John a gasp, "let's get out of the city now!"

They quickly made their way toward the gates they entered. But wave after wave of the nightmares they faced, decended upon them in greater numbers this time, and just as they were about to get to the gates... THE SPIRIT OF DUMA appeared!

1630722011996.png

And with that an army unlike any seen before of Arch Daemons amassed upon the adventurer's. So many that the screams of them falling from their steeds before they could even swing their axes once could shatter glass!

Everything they worked for seemed hopeless and the heroes fell one, by one, by one… then all of a sudden..

With a snap of the fingers snapped back to the edge with John saying “Don’t miss you git” looking over the collar of nightmares once more…

1630721676913.jpeg

John turned to Malvin... confused.

iGiptri.png

Did they all just have a collective dream and awake at the same time? What the hell just happened?

He ordered a retreat back to the Magistrate of Wind... one potion still in hand, he decided it best not to repeat what could only be a foretelling of things to come?

They went to the Magistrate of Wind to discuss. She was shocked to see them back so soon.
"Do you have the Relics?"

When they told The Magistrate what had happened... they fought their way into the city, they got all the relics, Duma appeared in spirit... they died... she knew what had happened, her worst fears had come to life, Duma was alive.. In a sense and their waking nightmare was a reality.

Because they freed and wielded the Duma 's Skull Staff, when the Captain Bain fell and took his last breath, his last thought turned to truth,
"My fackin hand is burned to hell, and I am out of rum", a side effect of a magical staff of this magnitude occurred. He summoned a dream state(the same Duma often spoke of)… a waking nightmare. He triggered the Time Loop that the magi of wind planned to use the staff itself for to trap the monsters in Luna and now... Duma as well.

The magistrate of Wind continue to tell the adventurer's how lucky they were to have that staff but also how this changed everything. She asked for the staff and began to infuse it with magics to cast the first part of the plan into motion.

But with this troubling news and the foretelling of Duma’s appearance, if they freed the collar from the base of the Library floor, they knew that it would release Duma from the Libraries grasp ofn them! They could not go back for the Collar of Nightmares, Duma was too connected to it.

But with the staff The Magistrate of Wind was able to infuse, she began to tighten the grip on the portals spilling evil into the world.

1630722626327.png

The staff itself proved powerful enough to protect the doorways of Luna from allowing any of the evil to continue spilling outside the gates and also create a new energy that will be used to help the adventurers in their battle. Easing the pain of the battles significantly.

1630722843596.jpeg

1630722655277.png

But this was only a patch and the start of a very difficult journey for the adventurers. As larger evils spawned inside the gates and the adventurers fought valiantly to defeat the waves,

2vd73iF.png

As they became less and less organized and their unity / group effort waned the Magistrate of Wind decided it was time to regroup her own thoughts about these monsters, sent by Duma, from wherever they were being held beneath Luna! The heroes continuing to bash everything inside the walls of Luna. As The magistrate saddled her royal steed, and John disappeared into the night as quickly as he appeared, you could hear the Magistrate mumbling to herself...

"But now that we know Duma lives, this changes everything. How will we get that collar of Nightmares?! How will we capture not only the energy of evil in Luna, but now Duma’s spirit itself, less Duma becomes UNCHAINED."

Her portal back to Wind evaporated the sounds of metal and magic flying in the walls of Luna still heard from miles away as the adventures still scattered throughout, smashed on the waves crashing against Luna with a sheer effort of brute force and resilience.

3A5T7Yz.png

We can only hope the effort seen tonight wasn't for naught and they can all work as a group again to make their final push, using the one relic they did get, knowing exactly who their enemy is now, utilizing these new found comradery, and knowing who they must defeat to end this nightmare. They must put to sleep DUMA once and for all!

OOC ANNOUNCEMENT:
THE DREAMS EVENT WILL CULMINATE ON THE 25TH OF SEPTEMBER.
TIME
: 8PM EST
PLACE: Luna

And with that, the heroes lined up in front of the Magistrate of Wind...

IvIyKRj.png

Luna in the distance, cracked to the core, smoke billowing from the endless nights of battle.
The Heroes one and all exhausted to the core.
Blood, sweat, tears, staining their armaments. They awaited their congratulatory moment in-front of the Magistrate. The smell of burning flesh still in their noses, the moment felt complex to say the least.

"Step Forward"

The Magistrate spoke.

What felt like moments before...

SBItrYJ.png

This was it, the moment that would either save millions or shatter the shard to the core. But these heroes didn't waiver, they showed up. Shined their armor. Stood in anticipation. Waiting for the Magistrate of Wind at the Refugee Camp outside Luna. A "safe haven" within a fog so thick, you could taste only death...

"Duma knows that Collar is still intact, you must all go into Luna and secure it before the minions they sent forth for the retrieval do before you!

BRING ME THEIR HAMMER!"

The magistrate of Wind spoke swiftly, as if their own plans had been interrupted by the appearance of The Chromatic Smith, sent by Duma to retrieve the very relic everyone there was gathered to get.

Without even thinking twice, having had a few nights to rest, the warriors before her dispersed. This time with a sense of comradery built up over the nights and days of endless war in the city of Luna, or what was left.

It wasn't long before they found the Smith making his way toward the ruins of the library, hammer in hand, ready to pry the collar from the foundation.

"Corp Por"

The first magic spell was fired.

f6rdcKX.png

Carnage ensued..

ga4FD2V.png

It was as if the smith had never even been there... but where was the hammer? It took them hours to dig under the corpses of elementals heavy with the weight of the elements to get to the corpse they now pile upon, until there it was, a hand sticking up through the death, grasping his hammer tightly.

7WgelPo.png

The Magistrate was pleased, but there was no time tonight to commend, this was the final strike at the heart of Luna, the final moments of a city lost, to save a world lamenting.

XgQ5Hwq.png

The true task at hand was here, proposed by the adventurer's themselves. To go into Luna, place magic dampeners around the former rune library to allow the Magistrate of Wind entrance to the city for a moment to free to Gorget and use the relics power to encompass the city in a temporal time loop. But who would be tasked with this?

3bdriKc.png

Bravely, but still shaking slightly, a drop of sweat stuck to their brow, Cinder stepped forward:

DeXMhed.png

"I can try if others can protect me while doing so!"

The magistrate approved. She then walked to the new Crystal Structures behind the camp, infused with Luna's walls themselves.

17aXwcj.png

"This is where we will place the Collar of Nightmares. It is with these creations from the Mages of Wind, that we will harness the power of the Gorget one more time to bind not only Duma, but Luna into a waking dream. No one within the city will know, including Duma, that they are in a dream. And forever, the city will fight itself, eternally damned." The magistrate explained.

"Now hurry there is no time left, Protect Lady Cinder, and yell out once you placed them so I can enter!"

KNqv3JE.png

Arch Daemons, a signature monster of Duma's nightmare appeared as they all began placing the dampeners around the library. Cinder, under immense pressure, actually ended up dropping one onto the corpse of a monster and almost losing 1 of only 4 dampeners needed to complete the protection spell! Luckily she was able to recover it and place it at the last moment! It was tense.

wjjBHUV.png

And with that, the spell was complete, putting the former Rune library in a temporal shift of time itself. The Magistrate appeared. But as she did, the power of her magical portal also awoke Duma!

Zqyb6wv.png

"Protect me! Duma is trying to get in! I will work on the collar of nightmares, you fend off the Spirit of Duma!"

"You wouldn't listen, I tried, I tried to help... I tried to save you from your own greed.
Vanity.
Self Righteousness.
I won't speak in riddles anymore.
Now I will do what I should have done in the beginning...
Cleansed this Shard of the true corruption.
ALL OF YOU!"
The Spirit of Duma proclaimed

Simultaneously, the Magistrate of Wind just freed the Collar of Nightmares from the foundation, but an unintended consequence of this action was it release the Spirit of Duma from the protection spell around the Library.

UYtP3rs.png

And with that, The Spirit of Duma broke through the magical barriers put up by the Magistrate of Wind, not only letting them flood Daemon's into the once great halls of the Library but

BcKIouH.png

trapping the Magistrate inside as well!

tLJMq8R.png

And so the once broken figure of Duma, now just a spirit, cast a shadow on Luna bigger than any of the heroes could have imagined. The darkness that covered the towering walls of Luna sent shivers up the blood soaked warriors backs. They watched as the Spirit of Duma spread through the entire city, into their core.

But somewhere, in the city, a cry was heard...

"ATTACK!"

And so the warriors who were temporarily frozen in fear, grasped their hilts, spoke their incantations, tempered their pets, and began the fight of their lives!!

"FOR LUNA!"

All the heroes converged down upon the Spirit of Duma, and as their weapons seemily struck their foe, although it felt as if they went right through the spirits being, something happened... The Spirit Of Duma manifested their worst fears... their worst enemies... their biggest competition...

Themselves!

jtQnJza.png

CsOEx1I.png

UgIOmVc.png

The more they fought the Spirit of Duma the more the fog of war covered the area, and all they could see were mirror images of themselves. Each swing of the blade, incantation of magics, bite from their beasts sunk into their own flesh!

Duma's pain was their pain, or was their pain Duma's?

Each warrior, while fighting side by side, was alone in what could only be considered a waking nightmare... fighting themselves! The sounds around them silenced, only hearing their inner worst fears, repeating over and over like a mantra.

Some of the warriors fell to their own insecurities, which seemily grew the power of the Spirit of Duma as when each fell to their knees, the blood soaked ground around them spurred up Arch Daemons.

vjrKiAJ.png

The spirit of Duma was feeding on their minds.

6yzYsuE.png

But like a bad dream, a through perseverance unlike this world has ever seen, eventually the Spirit of Duma did fall. Their corpse lay lifeless at the feet of the warriors. Their eyes and pupils dilated. Still coming to, not quite sure what had just happened. They felt as if their own bodies were possessed, their limbs now given life again. There was a pause of silence... then...

They CHEERED!

Dragging Duma's body to the Magistrate, who was free of the Rune Library's hold, now standing at the alter with Duma's Collar ready to cast protection over Luna's never ending nightmare...

zhaFoec.png

"You have laid waste to the Spirit of Duma!" The magistrate said.

Cheers erupted. Swords raised high!

The magistrate spoke again: "Please everyone, backup, I am going to place the collar of nightmares here and cast the spell putting Luna in a statis event, ending this once and for all!
This is the moment we have all been waiting for...
By my own eyes.. I cannot believe it is finally here."

She placed the collar upon the pedestal.

IcUv1vW.png

As she prepared her incantation she had some last words to say to those gathered around
"With this shield I cast over Luna... Forever. This will shield the city from leaking evil onto the rest of the lands!

Of course.. this means Luna is now trapped in an endless loop of time itself.
Fallen to the many Foils..."

The fading Spirit of Duma APPEARED, OUTSIDE THE WALLS OF LUNA! Still Bound to the collar in some way or another, allowing it to breach the walls...
EJRyVOo.png

"Hahahahaha, Fools... You think it is that easy?"

The fading spirit of Duma spoke, but voice was trailing off with each sentence, softer and softer, but more bone chilling than the last...

"You only...

Freed...

My...

Soul...."

73L56ln.png

And with that, The fading spirit of Duma was gone... into the air.. no where to be seen. But the ground shook. The walls of Luna cracked at the seams. Fire billowed up over the 100 foot walls, painting a landscape in each and every heroes war torn eyes as they stared, slack jawed at what was unfolding before them... The few remaining buildings crumbling into piles of dust... could it be that Duma wanted this all along? Were we all walking right into their trap? Had we just freed the second most powerful evil unto our own Shard since Mondain?

A thunderous sound was heard, in a rhythm only in sync with that of steps.

Rumble...

Rumble...

Rumble...

The Magistrate of Wind turned the color of her ice white robe...
"Oh, no... Go Back Into LUNA!!!
I sense an Evil...
UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE!"

nVNtaX7.png

Broken and worn, the heroes didn't skip a step. The fires of Luna reflecting off their armor as they ran back through the boarded up gates. Their swords drawn high and strong. But with each shake of the ground, their eyes darted to one another, looking for the hope they had just had, only to see a new fear.

From the Former Rune Library's Core it pushed it's way out...

DUMA UNCHAINED!!!!

VYFA8H7.png

T3YatE3.png

But something unexpected happened at that moment, and what can only be described as a true heroic moment for Sosaria, the Hero's did not slow their descent upon this monstrous beast.
They did not sheath their weapons to turn and run. They did not loosen the slack of the reigns.
They remembered the relentless nights of monsters flowing on the streets of their beloved Luna,
they remembered the sleepless nightmares that invaded their lives for the past moons,
they remembered the riddles that caused confusion and more chaos,
they remembered those who had fallen through the sleepless nights of screams on the wind,
they thought of Surveyor John returning to help them even after he lost it all to the explosion of the library,
they remembered the bonds they formed with one another over the fires lighting up the night skys as they mended their wounds outside Luna,
Night after Night...
Day after Day...
The countless forged weapons...
The endless reagants for spells...
They remembered the day the library erupted into the gateway to hell it was now...
They saw all the graves as they ran past the rubble of homes once filled with vendors brimming with life...
They saw the only living life left in Luna, flowers left for loved ones...
They remembered what they were fighting for...
They remembered why they were fighting for it...

AND THEY REFUSED TO LOSE ANY MORE BEAUTIFUL DREAMS TO THIS NIGHTMARE!!!!!!

Wave upon wave of heroes crashed into the monstrosity that was Duma's true form. Now freed of their Collar of Nightmares.. a true world breaker.

And at the spot where it all began, the beloved Rune Library created by Lylah Sol.

T3YatE3.png

It is hard to describe the battle, as anyone there will tell you the same, it was less of a visual, but a feeling. The feeling of unity, the feeling of strength, the feeling of hope.

......
...
..

The heroes lined up in front of the Magistrate of Wind...

The Magistrate spoke.

"Is it true?"

The Magistrate barely whispered as each and every hero who went through those gates returned that night...

Of course she meant the unspoken... Duma was truly vanquished.

And with that, she cast her final spell, binding the Collar of Nightmares to the magical crystals the Mages of Wind had created.

6aLjiHV.png

The fog of war that covered Luna, fell to the ground, like it was being pulled back into the Earth. The flames put out by the speed at which the air cleansed itself of the evil. And the smoke was left billowing in it's wake.

"Luna is now under the protection of the Mages of Wind
But sadly, as you know..
Luna has Fallen.

But it's sacrifice is for the greater good of us all.
It shall remain in this loop of it's own demise, preventing the spread of the cracks underneath it from ever reach the rest of this shard!
Let us have a moment of silence for Luna and all that befell it's walls..."

Silence ensues, tears of an almost bitter happiness on the cheeks of even the most war hardened warriors.

"Duma is trapped now, forever, unaware they have lost this battle.
They are fated to relive this loss, over and over. A riddle even they cannot crack. A nightmare of their own making.
We will need warriors like you every eve on this day, every year, as this moment in time,
as these events, as horrible as they have been, will repeat, as if on a sundial without days."

"This time however, you will have the full protection and assistance of the Mages of Wind.
With the relic being used for our own good instead of against us, we will enter these walls with you,
and fend off this horrible nightmare, and not lose a moment of sleep over it, EVER AGAIN!"

Cheers erupted from those gathered around!

"Because of your brave efforts...
This shard will not crack.
Your homes will not fall!
And your resolve will not falter!
TRUE HEROES EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!

Now, step forward one at a time, you are all to be rewarded for your heroics."

5pbbaY2.png

The Magistrate, called each and every one of the heroes up to the alter by name. She touched them on their shoulder, whispering a slight incantation they were unaware of, sharing a bit of her magic allowing their pain to be eased enough where they could sleep soundly tonight, filled with vivid dreams, fulfilling dreams. Not a nightmare in sight.

LhDjpKV.png

hSImJ3g.png

As the Magistrate touched the last shoulder, she said her final goodbyes.

DLMhZGJ.png

"We underestimated you all, you have taught the Mages of Wind quite a lot through your truly unique resolve. This isn't the end... the is only the beginning of many moons toward peace!"
"Rest now heroes, there is much healing to do, but tonight... we dream!"

END
