Begging in Ultima Online

Overview

Begging is primarily a role-playing skill in Ultima Online, with significant benefits mainly during the Halloween Trick or Treat event. Outside of this period, its practical use is limited.

Initial Training

  • Where to Train: You can start learning the Begging skill from gypsy NPCs in Trammel or Felucca, but not in Ilshenar.
  • How to Train: Use the skill from your skill list or via a macro, and target any NPC to practice begging.

Effects on Karma

  • Karma Impact: Using the Begging skill will reduce your karma.

Responses from NPCs

  • Successful Begging:
    • "I feel sorry for thee… here have a gold coin" (You receive a gold coin)
    • "Here take this" (For Heartwood elves, you receive an item)
  • Failed Begging:
    • "They seem unwilling to give you any money"
  • Too Far Away:
    • "You are too far away…" (Move closer to the NPC)
  • No Backpack:
    • "There is little chance of getting money from that."

Training in Heartwood

  • Heartwood Elves: Instead of gold, Heartwood elves give items labeled "acquired by begging."
    • Common Items (75% chance):
      • Water Pitcher (normal and reversed)
      • French Bread
      • Lantern
    • Uncommon Items (24% chance):
      • Pizza
      • Bowl of Stew
      • Wedge of Cheese
      • Bunch of Dates
      • Shirt
      • Pitcher of Liquor (normal and reversed)
    • Rare Items (1% chance):
      • Bottle of Wine
      • Flower Garland (normal and reversed)
      • Bedroll
      • Plate of Cookies
      • Fishing Pole
      • Fish Steak (cooked)
      • Turnip
      • Sake
  • Sanctuary Elves and Darius the Wise: Also give items but are harder to reach.

Trick or Treat Event

  • Duration: Each year around Halloween.
  • Mechanics: Say "Trick or Treat" to receive a targeting cursor. Target an NPC for a trick or a treat.
    • Treats: Mostly candy.
    • Tricks: Can include teleportation, temporary re-coloring of clothing, or an "evil twin" stealing your candy.
  • GM Beggars: Only Grandmaster beggars can receive rare decor items during this event, such as spider webs, miniature guillotines, iron maidens, skulls on a pike, skeletal torsos and heads, chairs in ghost costumes, and developers' heads on spikes.

Additional Notes

  • Begging for Gold: Successfully begged NPCs will give gold based on your karma level. Extremely low karma can result in receiving a negative amount of gold, creating bugged stacks labeled "A Gold Coin."
  • Heartwood Items: Elves in Heartwood and Darius the Wise in Moonglow provide various "Acquired by Begging" items. These items are unstackable.
  • Level of Rewards:
    • 75% Level 1 Items: Water Pitcher (normal and reversed), French Bread
    • 24% Level 2 Items: Lantern, Pizza, Bowl of Stew, Wedge of Cheese, Bunch of Dates, Shirt, Pitcher of Liquor (normal and reversed)
    • 1% Level 3 Items: Bedroll, Pitcher of Wine (normal and reversed), Bottle of Wine (empty), Flower Garland (normal and reversed), Plate of Cookies, Fishing Pole, Fish Steak (cooked), Sake, Turnip
