Hiding in Ultima Online
The Hiding skill is essential for thieves and ninjas, allowing them to become invisible to other players. However, being hidden does not make you unfindable. If another player bumps into you while you're hidden, they will receive a message saying, "You shove something invisible aside," and they can then use the "Reveal" spell or "Detect Hidden" skill to find you.
Key Points
- Visibility: You can hide to become invisible, but not unfindable. Players can still discover you using certain skills or spells.
- Looting: You can loot your own corpse while hidden without being revealed. However, looting other corpses will reveal you.
- Combat: You cannot hide while in combat or when creatures are actively hostile toward you. The higher your hiding skill, the less distance you need to run from combat to hide again. Spellcasting monsters may use the "Reveal" spell on your last known location.
- Communication: You can speak in global, party, or alliance chat without being revealed but not aloud on the screen.
- Allowed Skills: You can use the following skills without being revealed:
- Detect Hidden
- Lockpicking
- Item Identification
- Anatomy
- Arms Lore
- Animal Lore
- Evaluate Intelligence
- Forensic Evaluation
- Poisoning
- Herding
- Snooping
- Area Effects: Hiders can be revealed by area effect spells, monster aura effects, and explosive potions. Once revealed, you cannot hide again for a short period, depending on your hiding skill.
- Hiding in Your Own House: Hiding is always successful in your own house, regardless of your skill level.
Initial Training
- Chiyo the Hiding Instructor: You can start training and take an accelerated gain quest from Chiyo in the Ninjitsu Dojo in New Haven.
Training Guide
- 0 - 33: Pay Chiyo the Hiding Instructor or Gypsies, Rangers, Thieves for initial training.
- 33 - 50: Accept Chiyo's quest "Becoming One With The Shadows" for accelerated skill gain while training in the Ninja Dojo.
- 50 - 100: Hide in your house (where you cannot fail), use Stealth, and repeat. The use of the Stealth skill lowers the timer before you can hide again, allowing faster skill gain.
Additional Information
- Monsters and Hiding: Monsters that are spellcasters may cast "Reveal" on your last known location if you hide from them.
- Snooping and Ninjitsu: Proficient snoopers can peer into others packs while remaining hidden. Ninjitsu and the Stealth skill are also dependent on the ability to remain unseen. Using a Smoke Bomb allows ninjas to hide even while in combat.
- Hiding Duration: Unlike the Invisibility spell, hiding does not wear off and leaves you hidden until you perform another action.
