Lockpicking in Ultima Online

Overview: Lockpicking is a valuable skill for adventurers seeking treasure and rare items. It allows you to open locked chests, crates, and boxes found in various locations such as towns, dungeons, and during treasure hunts.

Training Lockpicking:

  1. 0-30 Skill:
    • Buy the skill from an NPC Thief or Tinker (except on Siege and Mugen shards).
    • Use lockboxes made with 30 Tinkering skill.
    • Pick crates or chests in town.
  2. 30-50 Skill:
    • Use lockboxes made with 50 Tinkering skill.
    • Pick crates in NPC shops.
  3. 50-70 Skill:
    • Use lockboxes made with 70 Tinkering skill.
    • Pick crates and barrels in towns (use a crystal ball of knowledge to find the right level containers).
    • Pick level 1 dungeon chests.
    • Pick level 1 treasure chests if you have Cartography skill.
  4. 70-95 Skill:
    • Use lockboxes made with GM (100) Tinkering skill.
    • Pick higher-level town crates and barrels.
    • Pick level 2 dungeon chests (at 72 skill).
    • Pick level 2 treasure chests if you have Cartography skill.
    • Pick Yew prison cell doors (at 75 skill).
    • Pick level 3 dungeon chests (at 84 skill).
    • Pick level 3 treasure chests if you have Cartography skill.
  5. 95-GM (Grandmaster):
    • Pick level 4 dungeon chests.
    • Pick level 4 treasure chests.
    • Continue with high-level town crates and barrels.
    • Pick Yew prison cell doors.

Training Tips:

  • Create a Tinker/Carpenter:
    • Make your own lockboxes to train with. Typically, a set includes boxes made with 30, 50, 75, and GM Tinkering skill.
  • Lockpicking Houses:
    • Some shards have player-made lockpicking houses. Use the in-game chat system or message boards to find one on your shard.

Optimal Training Locations:

  • Basic Level (up to 50 skill):
    • Inns in Jhelom and Skara Brae (not all chests are locked).
    • Provisioners in most towns.
    • Jhelom Pits and Docks barrels.
  • Mid-Level (50-70 skill):
    • Provisioners.
    • Jhelom Pits and Docks barrels.
    • Vesper Bank.
    • Warrior’s Guild in Britain (secret room).
    • Despise Dungeon (Trammel level 1) – beware of negative karma.
  • High Level (70-GM):
    • Vesper Bank.
    • Warrior’s Guild in Britain.
    • Despise Dungeon (Trammel).
    • Destard Dungeon (Level 1).
    • Yew Crypt.
    • Yew prison cell doors.
    • Shame Dungeon (Level 5 islands).

Special Considerations:

  • Magic Unlock Spell:
    • Can be used to open some locked chests at low levels (except on Siege and Mugen shards).
  • Remove Trap Skill:
    • Use this skill to disarm chest traps, or cast Telekinesis to trigger traps from a safe distance.
  • Discordance Trick:
    • In Twisted Weald, use a Satyr's Discordance to temporarily lower your skills, allowing you to gain skill points faster when picking locks.

Note:

  • Be cautious of trapped containers in towns and dungeons. Use appropriate skills or spells to handle traps.
  • Utilize player-made rune libraries for easier access to training locations.

Favorite Picking Locations:

  • Yew Crypt:
    • Entrance at 75.24N x 24.57W. Be prepared to walk as Mark spell works in limited areas.
  • Shame Dungeon (Level 5 islands):
    • Multiple chests with minimal risk once on the islands.
  • Destard Dungeon:
    • Rune marked at a specific location provides relatively safe access to chests.

With proper training and practice, the Lockpicking skill will become an invaluable asset in your adventures, unlocking paths to fabulous wealth and rare treasures.
