Musicianship in Ultima Online
Overview:
- Musicianship is the core Bard skill, essential for performing other Bard skills like Provocation, Discordance, and Peacemaking.
- It also allows a Carpenter to produce musical instruments with a 10% success bonus over NPC-purchased instruments.
Uses:
- Musicianship itself produces either fine music or unpleasant noise.
- It influences the success rate of other Bard skills in conjunction with a target's Barding Difficulty.
- Allows the use of the Fire Horn.
Training:
- Active:
- 0 - 30: Purchase training from an NPC Bard.
- 30+: Double-click any musical instrument to gain skill. This is the quickest method if you've completed training other Bard skills.
- Passive:
- 0 - 30: Purchase training from an NPC Bard.
- 30+: Musicianship may increase anytime other Bard skills are used. Typically, Musicianship will reach the desired level before other Bard skills are fully trained.
Instruments:
- Instruments include tambourines, drums, bamboo flutes, lutes, lap harps, standing harps, aud char, and the Fire Horn.
- Most instruments wear out with use:
- Non-exceptional player-made, NPC-purchased, or magical instruments: ~400 uses.
- Exceptional player-made instruments: ~700-900 uses.
- The last instrument double-clicked will be used for Bard skills.
- Double-clicking an instrument sets it as the new default.
- Exceptional player-crafted instruments add a 10% success chance.
- Magical instruments can be more effective against specific creatures, adding a 20% success chance, or less effective, reducing the success chance by 20% against opposing creatures.
Special Instruments:
- Gwenno’s Harp: Repond and Reptile slayer, 1600 uses.
- Iolo’s Lute: Demon and Undead slayer, 1600 uses.
- Dreadhorn’s Flute: Regular instrument, self-recharging, 700 uses.
- Cleanup Point Instruments:
- Nature’s Tears: Fey Slayer, 450 uses.
- Primordial Decay: Elemental Slayer, 450 uses.
- Arachnid Doom: Arachnid Slayer, 450 uses.
- Flute of Renewal: Not currently spawning, superslayer in 6 forms, self-recharging, 300 uses. Destroyed if it reaches 0 uses.
- Fire Horn: Common monster drop, area effect fire damage, requires 52.6 Musicianship and uses 4 Sulfurous Ash per use. 1% chance to break with each use.
Musicianship and Other Bard Skills:
- A non-difficulty based check of Musicianship is made before attempting other Bard skills.
- Failing the Musicianship check means the subsequent skill check is not made.
- Each point above 100 in Musicianship grants a 1% success bonus to Discordance, Targeted Peacemaking, and Provocation attempts.
Restrictions:
- All Bard abilities have a range (base range: 8 tiles, +1 tile per 15 skill points).
- The bard must stay within range for the effect to continue.
- If a creature is already under a Bard effect, the first effect takes precedence if another bard tries the same effect.
Bard Masteries:
- Enhancements to Bard skills, making the bard a valuable addition to any hunting party.
- Requires high intelligence, meditation skill, and mana regeneration items.
