Parrying
Parrying in Ultima Online
During combat in Ultima Online, the Parrying and Bushido skills determine whether an attack can be fully blocked. Attacks from melee and archery can be fully parried if the defender is equipped with a Shield or a Melee weapon.
When a parry is successful, the attacker's strike misses entirely. Additionally, parrying a special move prevents it from draining mana from the user.
It's important to note that using a shield may reduce your chance to block attacks if also using the Bushido skill.
Training
For effective training, quantity of opponents matters more than quality. Fighting numerous low to mid-level creatures yields better skill gains than facing one high-level foe. When using a shield, a buckler is preferable over a heater shield.
Formula
- Blocking with a shield:
- Percentage Chance = (Parrying Skill – Bushido Skill) / 4
- If either skill is 100 or above, add 5% to the chance.
- Blocking with a 1-handed weapon (without a shield):
- New Formula = (Parrying Skill * 10) * (Bushido Skill * 10) / 48000
- Use whichever is higher between the New Formula and the Legacy formula.
- Add 5% if either Parrying or Bushido skill is 100 or above.
- Blocking with a 2-handed weapon:
- New Formula = (Parrying Skill * 10) * (Bushido Skill * 10) / 41140
- Use whichever is higher between the New Formula and the Legacy formula.
- Add 5% if either Parrying or Bushido skill is 100 or above.
Dexterity Modifier: If Dexterity is less than 80, apply a modifier:
- Modifier = (80 – Dexterity) / 100
- Final Percentage Chance of blocking = Base Chance * (1 – Modifier)
