Tracking in Ultima Online

Tracking is a skill that allows characters to detect the presence of invisible or hidden characters, monsters, or NPCs. Detected targets do not become visible but can be located and followed using an arrow that constantly points in their direction.

Higher Tracking skill enables characters to track those with higher Hiding or Stealth skills over broader ranges and more reliably. In PvP combat, even minimal Tracking skill allows characters to effectively pursue visible opponents, making escape more challenging.

Humans have a base minimum of 20 skill points in Tracking due to their Jack of all Trades trait.

Training

  • 0 - 40: Train from Walker The Tracking Instructor in New Haven.
  • 40 - 100: Use the skill actively. Skill gain occurs as long as the tracking window is open.

For accelerated skill gain up to 50, complete the quest from Walker The Tracking Instructor in New Haven, receiving Blessed leather pants (Walker's Leggings).

Usage

To use Tracking:

  • In the classic client, click the blue gem on the skill list or set up an in-game macro.
  • In the enhanced client, open the skill list and drag the skill icon to a hotbar slot.
  • Select Animals, Monsters, NPCs, or Players from the tracking menu.
  • A small arrow will indicate the direction your target has moved. If the target moves out of range or recalls away (in the case of a player), the arrow disappears, and a message indicates you've lost the target.

Tracking Players in 'Form'

  • For players using forms like Wraith Form, Horrific Beast, Lich Form, Vampiric Embrace (necromancy), or monster forms from the Polymorph spell (Magery), select the 'Monsters' option.
  • For players using Ninjitsu 'Animal Form' or animal forms from the Polymorph spell (Magery), select the 'Animals' option.
  • Ghosts cannot be tracked.
