Who is Surveyor John?

Surveyor John, the legendary "Handy Man" of UOAlive

Surveyor John, the legendary "Handy Man" of UOAlive, is the go-to for tasks others can't or won't handle. With a reputation built on his love for gold, booze, and a rough tongue, he's been around since the beginning. Often found at the Three Stone Tavern enjoying a drink, John's interactions were once purely roleplay. However, as his empire expanded, he began outsourcing his services. While still in charge, John no longer makes house calls but offers a range of services detailed below.

Encouraging Smaller Builds and Community Spaces

Massive 30×30 homes can dominate the landscape and reduce opportunities for others. By adding extra costs (like the 30×30 Moving Tax), we encourage players to consider smaller plots or communal towns, which foster cooperation and a sense of shared space.

Server Support and Balance

Part of the cost for premium placements must be paid via direct donation to help fund server expenses. We balance in-game Sovereigns with real-world contributions to ensure that our community can continue to thrive without inflation or economic imbalances.

Consistency with Past Decisions

We’ve denied similar requests before when claims of “future community benefit” weren’t backed by actual use. Our goal is to support existing contributions to the server—not just proposals that might not pan out.

Visual and Functional Quality

We care about aesthetics. Homes placed in mountains or other special locations must complement the environment. That includes building in designated areas, minimizing sprawl, and avoiding eye-sores.

In Short

  • We prioritize those who’ve consistently contributed to UOAlive, rather than unproven promises of benefit.
  • Smaller homes or community-based towns often result in a healthier, more engaging environment for everyone.

Thank you for understanding and helping us maintain the spirit of UOAlive! If you have any questions about these policies or need clarification, please let us know. We appreciate your enthusiasm for creating unique spaces in our world—and together, we can keep UOAlive fair, fun, and vibrant.

Special Rules for Mountain Homes

In Short:

  • Mountain homes are special privileges, not entitlements.
  • They come with extra costs to reflect their rarity and the added workload required to build or move them.
Resource-Intensive Editing

Mountain areas require extra work to add tiles to fit plots, adjust, and ensure everything looks and functions properly. This increases the time and resources our team must invest in your build and on the server.

Rarity and Fairness

Mountains are a limited resource in UOAlive. We want to maintain the uniqueness of these spots while also ensuring that the broader player base has fair opportunities to access premium locations.

Overall Disclaimer

  • 30x30 homes incur a 30x30 Moving Tax to balance server resources and encourage smaller, community-based builds.
    • 30 x 30 Homes may be denied due to their size if not a community location that has already been established.
  • No dirt plots.
  • No connecting multiple 30x30 plots.
  • Individual builds will cost more than community-benefiting builds.
  • All builds are subject to approval by Surveyor John and can be declined for any reason.
  • Payments exceeding 20,000 Sovereigns require at least 50% as a direct donation to server expenses.
  • All interactions occur in Discord, not in-game.
